Staff Software Engineer

Engineering | San Francisco, CA & Remote, USA

Our team builds APIs that power the offline world. We started with our print and mail API, which helps developers programmatically send, route, and track physical mail at scale. One in four households in the USA has received mail through Lob.

Our second product is our Address Verification API. Used by everyone from small businesses to Fortune 100 companies, address verification helps people ensure the things they’re sending actually get there. Customers and developers alike love our products, and between our best-in-class, CASS-certified US solution and our international offerings, we’re growing fast to meet their needs.

About the Team

The Lob engineering team builds, maintains and scales a core API used by Lob’s customers to send millions of pieces of mail.

Some challenges we face include building APIs that handle thousands of requests per second, scaling datastores and data pipelines, and delivering real-time webhooks based on mail tracking information. We run a handful of stateless applications powered by Node.js, Go, and Elixir. We rely on Postgres, Elasticsearch, and Redis for storing data. And we rely on many AWS services such as S3, SQS, Lambda, and Redshift.

We are a motivated group of people who collaborate with cross functional teams like Product Management, Customer Success and Sales on a daily basis to build features that make integrating with Lob a delightful experience for customers.

As a Staff Software Engineer at Lob, you will…

  • Set technical direction and strategy for services powering our core API, webhooks system, tracking events infrastructure, and more.
  • Guide scalable and pragmatic software architectural decisions in design reviews.
  • Improve uptime and reliability by carefully planning for zero-downtime changes and migration, reviewing code, and mitigating incidents.
  • Work with Product Management and other Engineers to research, design and implement new API and Platform capabilities.
  • Instrument metrics and monitoring to better understand system health and anticipate scaling needs.
  • Help define and improve engineering best practices for the organization.
  • Hire, onboard, and mentor engineers to help grow the organization.

For this role, we’re looking for...

  • 7+ years of full-stack (backend, frontend, and database) experience in a modern web framework. Show us how you’ve used technology to solve problems.
  • Exceptional collaborators and communicators. At Lob, you win by helping others succeed. You have concrete examples of ways you’ve gone above and beyond to help the people around you meet their goals.
  • Experience building or working with APIs. It turns out that they’re are a lot harder to design and change than they are to consume. You have Strong Opinions about what good API design looks like, informed by real-world experience.
